This module will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the life cycle of a trade-mark and the skills required to manage the various stages of a trade-mark application through to registration. It is offered in an interactive format with guidance by an instructor.

Learning objectives :

  • Understand the various stages of a trade-mark application
  • Analyze various types of searches
  • Prepare search opinions
  • Acquire knowledge of trade-mark filing strategies for both Canadian and foreign applicants
  • Comprehend the practices and policies of the Trade-marks Office
  • Prepare applications, responses and other documents needed during trade-mark prosecution
  • Develop an understanding of post-examination, registration and post-registration issues and procedures

Who should participate

Trade-mark agent trainees (some experience recommended), trade-mark practitioners (beginner to mid-level experience), in-house counsel, paralegals, trade-mark portfolio managers, law clerks and law students.

Course format

This online course includes: reading material, practical exercises (Q&A), caselaw, assignments and past trade-mark agent exams. Assignments will be reviewed by instructors who will remain accessible throughout the course. Students and instructors will participate in a web-based discussion forum. The course will break from May 17 to May 28, 2010 to facilitate participation in the INTA meeting.

Accreditation

This course has been approved for 15 hours of continuing professional development by the Law Society of British Columbia.
