About the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC)

Founded in 1926, the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) is Canada's pre-eminent association of professionals who specialize in intellectual property: patents for inventions, trade-marks, copyright, and industrial designs. IPIC is committed to the protection and promotion of intellectual property in the Canadian economy. For more information about IPIC, click here.

IPIC's Objectives

  1. Represent the interests of Canadian intellectual property practitioners;
  2. Influence the development of intellectual property laws to the extent they impact intellectual property matters in Canada;
  3. Be the recognized and visible authority on Canadian intellectual property law and practice;
  4. Ensure high levels of knowledge, training, and ethics in Canadian intellectual property practitioners; and
  5. Increase the level of intellectual property business in the Canadian economy.
IPIC's Members

IPIC is the only intellectual property association in Canada to which nearly all patent agents, trade-mark agents and lawyers specializing in intellectual property belong. IPIC members work all sectors of the Canadian economy including major Canadian law firms, private practice and corporations. IPIC members can be found in all areas of the Canadian "knowledge economy" such as biotechnology, e-commerce and information technology. They include professionals with expertise in scientific and engineering disciplines together with thorough knowledge of the legal aspects of intellectual property.

There are over 1,700 IPIC members including members from other countries who practise in the field of intellectual property in their own countries.

IPIC Member Services

IPIC offers a growing number of services for its members:

  • Professional development seminars and conferences on cutting edge intellectual property topics featuring experts in the field.

  • Patent and trade-mark courses and tutorials which can help candidates prepare for the examinations leading to designation as a patent agent or trade-mark agent registered to practise before the Canadian Patent Office or Trade-marks Office.

  • Networking opportunities for career advancement and an annual membership directory. The directory is available in hard copy and on the members' portion of the IPIC web site.

  • Opportunities to participate on over 40 IPIC committees which study every facet of IP practice in Canada and internationally and discuss these with government. Access to committee reports and findings.

  • Representation of IP professionals before Government including Industry Canada and the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. Forms of representation include meetings with government officials and submissions for policy and practice changes.

  • A professional journal with information on the latest intellectual property issues and research.

  • An IP newsletter published 6 times a year. This newsletter informs members about changes in IP policy, practices, and recent cases as well as developments at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO).

  • An index to Canadian intellectual property literature to assist in research.

  • A "members only" portion of the IPIC web site enabling IPIC members to view and key word search our professional journal, newsletter and intellectual property literature index.

  • Use of the IPIC designation for Members (formerly Fellows) and Associate members.

    Membership in IPIC

    IPIC offers different types of membership: Honorary, Member, Associate, Non-resident Associate, Affiliate, Non-resident Affiliate, Student, Emeritus and Academic. Students wanting to know more about the IP profession and how to become an IP professional are welcome.
