Trademark Foundations and Lifecycle is the first course in a 4-course certification program leading to the designation of Certified Canadian Trademark Administrator.
What is a Trademark Administrator?
A trademark administrator primarily assists a trademark agent or lawyer practicing in the field of trademark law. Duties cover a wide range of tasks related to the administration of trademarks such as conducting trademark searches, filing trademark applications, paying government fees, docketing deadlines, corresponding with the Trade-marks Office, drafting letters to clients, assisting with the administration of contentious proceedings.
Course 1: Learning objectives
Gain an understanding of the lifecycle of a trademark, the Trade-marks Act, the Trade-marks Regulations and the Correspondence Procedures with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.
In this first course, you will acquire the basic knowledge expected of a Certified Canadian Trademark Administrator working in the field of trademark law.
Who should participate?
There are no pre-requisites to enroll in any of the 4 courses. They are primarily intended for trademark assistants, trademark paralegals, and trademark clerks seeking the certification of trademark administrator. The courses will also be of interest to individuals wishing to acquire knowledge of trademark administration.
What is the program format?
The courses are delivered online and are self-paced. The study materials include quizzes (Q&A), as well as practice assignments accompanied by model answers. Students will have access to a trademark agent who will answer questions and provide guidance in “Ask the Expert” format.
There is no time limit to complete the courses which are offered on demand.

Once you have completed all 4 courses, you may sit for the online exam offered twice per year, in the spring and the fall.
The first exam will be offered in 2019.
