We are seeking an Intellectual Property Lawyer to join our growing litigation practice, based in our Montreal office. As an IP Litigation Lawyer at Smart & Biggar, you will join and work closely with our team of leaders in the IP and legal industries. Working directly with our Montreal office Managing Partner, you will tenaciously defend and assert our clients’ IP assets, which are at the heart of their businesses, against their competitors. You will regularly work with professionals who possess expertise in patents, trademarks and litigation. The right candidate will find many opportunities to learn and grow within our Firm. This position is a great fit for experienced lawyers wishing to grow their IP practice and learn new skills. 

The ideal candidate:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of relevant IP and legal principles
  • Sees the “big picture”; analyzes problems thoroughly and capably; interprets jurisprudence and legislation to look at issues in a novel way and applies these skills to provide solutions and advice
  • Maintains integrity, professionalism and high ethical and personal standards
  • Acts as a strategic advisor by asking questions and diligently approaching clients’ matters to understand their business needs, including to help solve unexpressed needs
  • Delivers superior client service and is responsive to clients and stakeholders needs and expectations
  • Ability to make complex or abstract ideas or situations clear and understandable.
  • Confidently structures written and oral communications in a clear, concise and articulate manner
  • Demonstrates willingness to propose and try new, innovative approaches
  • Stimulates an environment that fosters creative thinking and solutions
  • Draws on resources from across the firm, where possible, to provide the highest level of service to clients
  • Brings positive energy to work teams and the office

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) is essential
  • Legally entitled to practice law in Canada and a member in good standing with the Quebec provincial bar
  • Technical scientific background considered an asset
  • Experience with the Federal Courts is also considered an asset
  • Minimum 3-4 years of Intellectual Property or Commercial litigation experience
  • Strong written and oral communication abilities in both French and English
  • Strong business acumen
