We are seeking a qualified Trademark Lawyer and registered Trademark Agent to join our Montreal Trademarks practice group. In this role, you will work closely with world-class leaders in IP whose experience and expertise are used to provide clients with sophisticated and practical advice in all areas of trademark practice. As a member of the highly sought-after Smart & Biggar team, you will have the opportunity to provide advice and service to the owners of the world’s most valuable brands. The ideal candidate:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of relevant intellectual property and trademark principles
  • Exhibits business acumen and a propensity to further develop it
  • Sees the “big picture” and analyzes problems thoroughly and capably
  • Maintains integrity, professionalism and high ethical and personal standards
  • Acts as a strategic advisor by asking questions and diligently approaching clients’ matters to understand their business needs, including to help solve unexpressed needs
  • Delivers superior client service
  • Is responsive to client and stakeholder needs and expectations
  • Has the capability of making complex or abstract ideas or situations clear, simple, and understandable
  • Confidently structures written and oral communications in a clear, concise and articulate manner, with appropriate language and focusing on key points
  • Demonstrates willingness to propose and try new, innovative approaches
  • Brings positive energy to work teams
  • Perfectly bilingual (French & English)

 Qualifications & Experience: 

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) is essential
  • Legally entitled to practice law in Canada and a member in good standing with the Quebec provincial bar
  • Registered Canadian Trademark Agent
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ of trademark prosecution experience
  • Specialist in trademark prosecution and experience in contentious trademark matters
  • IP litigation experience is not required but considered an asset
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have established a strong and well-developed professional network in the Montreal marketplace
