Purpose of Role

BLG’s Intellectual Property is looking for a dynamic Paralegal with Canadian and US Patent experience with a growth mindset that can help solve for today while building for the future.

The Paralegal will be an important member of the legal team working with the Intellectual Property Agents and Legal Support Staff to provide the highest level of client service while having the opportunity to develop their skills as part of a dynamic and successful national team. The ideal candidate must be a team player, have a strong work ethic, a mind-set of continuous improvement, and be a self-starter in a fast paced environment.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the desire and ability to identify problems and gaps, develop and design creative solutions and will have experience working in an Intellectual Property environment as a Paralegal.

This position will be housed at either the Vancouver or Ottawa office.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role include processing a variety of complex Paralegal tasks related to US, Foreign, PCT and Canadian Patent Prosecution from filing to issuance. The primary responsibilities of this role may include:

  • Responsibility of managing patent matters from filing through issuance, including monitoring official deadlines;
  • Preparing, organizing and collecting documents for regular and national phase patent filings, in Canada, the United States and the Patent Cooperation Treaty;
  • Preparing and filing formal documents such as Assignments, Declarations, Powers of Attorney etc. in various jurisdictions worldwide;
  • Interacting with the client, CIPO, USPTO and other foreign patent offices (e.g., WIPO) with respect to active patent matters, and corresponding with foreign associates to facilitate ongoing prosecution of patent applications;
  • Acting as a team player within the National Paraprofessional Services Group assisting with overflow, urgent deadlines and backup coverage.

The key competencies required are:

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant patent experience with recent experience and knowledge in Canadian, US and Foreign filing and prosecution
  • A combination of law firm and in-house experience would be considered a strong asset
  • Exceptional computer skills, particularly with Windows-based computer systems including Adobe, Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong organizational skills in planning and prioritizing work and an ability to multi-task
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail; demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness
  • Strong interpersonal skills and initiative; ability to work independently with minimum supervision and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Flexibility and adaptability for working with changing priorities and deadline
